The Tri-Lakes area, also known as Monument, is conveniently located between Denver and Colorado Springs and attracts a number of commuters from both cities. Residents of Tri-Lakes enjoy views of the Front Range and towering ponderosa pines, as well as proximity to three lakes— Palmer Lake, Monument Lake, and Lake Woodmoor. This large suburb is home to some amazing local businesses and open spaces, so take some time to explore. Here are a few suggestions to get you started.
Outside — Palmer Lake Recreation Area is a 36-acre park at the base of Ben Lomand mountain, containing the picturesque Palmer Lake. The Santa Fe trail runs along the north side of the lake and a walking path winds along the south side. The park features a picnic pavilion that can be reserved through the town of Palmer Lake, as well as a playground for children.
Palmer Lake’s multi-use trail is perfect for hiking, biking, or horseback riding, but unfortunately, dogs are not allowed on the reservoir trail. Palmer Lake is stocked for the fishing season, so make sure your fishing license is up-to-date, and then spend a relaxing day by the lake. Palmer Lake Recreation Area also hosts events throughout the year, such as 10ks, half-marathons, and ice skating during the winter months.
Food — Ramen Chops is a Japanese-style noodle-bar serving a selection of warm and cold noodle bowls Mon.-Sat. from 11-7. You’ll enjoy sitting in their cozy, modern dining room, or taking your food to-go and relaxing in the comfort of your own home. Make sure to check out their delicious homemade buns and get some mochi ice cream for dessert.
Ramen Chops prides themselves on using only the freshest ingredients, and their friendly staff will guide you through the process of building your own delicious bowl. Or you can always choose a signature bowl off of their menu, such as their creative takes on Miso soup or a Caesar salad. Their motto is “There is no bigger reason, just human connection,” so make sure to take a moment to connect with the owners and other community members in this one-of-a-kind restaurant.
Pets — Greenland Open Space is located along I-25 near Larkspur and features an 11 mile trail system for you and your furry friend to explore. The trails are easy to moderate with rolling hills and a slight elevation gain—perfect for dogs and hikers of any level. Dogs must be kept on-leash on the multi-use trails where you may encounter hikers, bikers, and even horses.
Greenland Open Space also features a 17-acre off-leash dog park where your dog can run and explore. The park has relatively little traffic, especially on weekdays, so it’s perfect for the independent dog who just needs a change of scenery. If your dog craves socialization and playtime, try going on the weekends instead. The dog park includes an agility practice course, which you’ll enjoy whether you’re a seasoned agility veteran or just want to try something new with your dog. Bring plenty of sunscreen and water, as there is relatively little shade, and plan to stay a while.
Drinks — Pikes Peak Brewing Co. is a veteran-owned brewery with locations in Monument and downtown Colorado Springs. At the Monument taproom, you’ll enjoy great pub food, such as beer-cheese soup and pork chile sandwiches paired with a delicious can or pint of their house-brewed beer. Pikes Peak Brewing is currently limited to patio seating and to-go orders, but you’ll have a beautiful view if you opt to sit outside!
Pikes Peak Brewing prides themselves on their ales and IPAs, but you’ll find a few high-quality porters, sours, and lagers thrown in. No matter what kind of beer drinker you are, you’re sure to find something to enjoy. Though all events are currently on hold, watch for Pikes Peak Brewing to resume their live music series and other community events.
Family — Monumental Miniatures and Toy Shop was founded by Gayle Wade over 20 years ago. Being a lifelong collector of miniatures, Gayle is passionate about finding quality pieces that appeal to a range of clients, from young children with a limited budget to serious collectors.
The shop is filled with glass boxes, which are fully-furnished as “rooms” of a dollhouse to inspire shoppers with the possibilities of her products. A few years after opening, Monumental Miniatures expanded to carry quality American-made toys, such as Melissa & Doug and Estes Rockets, and naturally has a large selection of premade dollhouses and dollhouse kits
